Berlin. At night.

Berlin is considered one of the freest cities in the world.

A city where people can disappear. Where nobody asks who you are. Where music dissolves borders and a night sometimes lasts longer than a whole weekend.

But what happens when freedom becomes a business?

When clubs become brands. When tourists discover the night. When rents rise. When spaces disappear. When the door decides who belongs – and who stays outside.

LOST IN BERLIN tells of this night. Not from the outside. From the middle of it. Of doors, bars, dancefloors, encounters, intoxication, freedom – and the people who made Berlin at night what it once was.

Who owns the night?

Falk Karrasch

I write about the night because I know it.

I'm Falk Karrasch. Berlin author and bartender from club culture.

For years I've worked where others party: behind bars, in the middle of a Berlin night that keeps changing.

I've seen what this city makes possible at night. Freedom. Encounters. Love. Intoxication. Boundlessness. But also exclusion, commercialisation, displacement – and the question of who these spaces still belong to.

LOST IN BERLIN is not a book that looks at the club scene from outside. It's my view from within.

The book

Lost in Berlin

Berlin nightlife between freedom, intoxication and displacement

Available from 1 December 2026

Berlin is changing. The clubs are changing. And with them, the night.

Lost in Berlin takes you behind the doors of Berlin club culture and asks an uncomfortable question:

Who owns the bass?

It's about the history of electronic music. About Detroit and Berlin. About freedom and commerce. About tourism and displacement. About safe spaces and exclusion. About drugs, responsibility and the people behind the night. And about a city whose most famous myth may be about to disappear.

The music is off. The lights come on.

Outside the club, people try to work out what time it actually is. Some go home. Others look for the next place. And Berlin is already starting its normal day.

But the question remains:

What remains of freedom?
