Biography

I was born on 25 March 1989 in Weißenfels, Saxony-Anhalt. Early on I developed an interest in people, their stories and the lives behind the visible everyday.

After school I completed two apprenticeships – as a restaurant specialist and as a retail salesman. At 18 I left home for Leipzig, where I came into close contact with nightlife, music, fashion and different social scenes. For a time I also worked as a model, among others for Chanel – a look into a world where people are judged by their appearance.

After roughly ten years in Leipzig I moved to Berlin. As a bartender and through years of working in Berlin nightlife, I experience club culture not as an outsider but from within – at bars, on floors, backstage and in countless encounters.

Why I write

I did not come to writing via a classic literary path. It grew out of the need to process experiences, record observations and make visible the topics society prefers to stay silent about.

Personal experiences of loss and grief, together with an intense engagement with Berlin's night and club culture, became key impulses. My ambition as an author: not to write about people and scenes, but from within their reality.

Freedom · Exclusion · Body shaming · Loss · Self-worth · Drugs and intoxication · Queer realities · Berlin nightlife

“Berlin showed me how free a person can be – and how quickly freedom can be lost.”

Stance

“Freedom is not recklessness.”
  • Freedom needs boundaries.
  • Club culture needs protected spaces.
  • Awareness is responsibility, not marketing.
  • A city loses something when its subculture becomes mere product.

Lost in Berlin

The book grew out of working inside the scene – and out of the question of what happens when a subculture becomes an international product. Tourism, commerce and rising costs threaten the very free spaces Berlin is known for worldwide. This needs to be talked about now, while those spaces still exist.
